SCRS - Basic Plan Information

If you meet the following requirements, you are considered eligible to retire (see Correlated Systems if you have an account in more than one retirement system):

If Your Membership Began Before January 1, 2001:

Regular Service Retirement (Unreduced Annuity):

  • 28 years of service credit; or

  • Age 65 with at least five years of combined creditable service on December 31, 2000, or on December 31, 2000, must be both at least age 60 and an active contributing member.

Early Service Retirement (Reduced Annuity):*

  • Age 60 with at least five years of combined creditable service on December 31, 2000, or on December 31, 2000, must be both at least age 60 and an active contributing member. Your annuity is permanently reduced 5 percent for each year of age less than 65; or

  • Age 55 or older with 25 years of service credit, five years of which must be creditable service on December 31, 2000. Your annuity is permanently reduced 4 percent for each year of service credit less than 28.

If Your Membership Began After December 31, 2000:

Regular Service Retirement (Unreduced Annuity):

  • 28 years of service credit, five years of which must be earned service; or

  • Age 65 with at five years of earned service.

Early Service Retirement (Reduced Annuity):*

  • Age 60 with at least five years of earned service. Your annuity is permanently reduced 5 percent for each year of age less than 65; or

  • Age 55 or older with 25 years of service credit, five years of which must be earned service. Your annuity is permanently reduced 4 percent for each year of service credit less than 28.

*If you retire under the early retirement provisions at age 55 with 25 years of service, you are not eligible for cost-of-living adjustments until the second July 1 after you reach age 60 or the second July 1 after the date you would have attained 28 years of service credit had you not retired.

Use our calculators to see what it would cost to purchase additional service credit, or to estimate your retirement benefit.
