The General Assembly Retirement System

The General Assembly Retirement System (GARS) was established January 1, 1966, to provide retirement and other benefits to members of the South Carolina General Assembly. All members of the South Carolina General Assembly must join the General Assembly Retirement System (GARS) upon taking office.

If you are a retired member of GARS, the Judges and Solicitors Retirement System (JSRS), the South Carolina Retirement System (SCRS), or the Police Officers Retirement System (PORS), you have the choice of electing non-membership in GARS. For more information about your GARS benefits, please, contact the Retirement Systems.

Use our calculators to see what it would cost to purchase additional service credit, or to estimate your retirement benefit.
