Considering Membership - Employees

South Carolina Retirement System and
State Optional Retirement Program

Permanent, full-time, and part-time employees must join the South Carolina Retirement System (SCRS) or elect participation in the State Optional Retirement Program (State ORP) unless the position in which they are hired is specifically exempted by statute. Your human resources office can tell you if your position is exempted by statute.

If you are eligible for SCRS membership or State ORP participation, view and/or download the Select Your Retirement Plan guide. This publication provides an overview of both plans and will help you determine which of the two retirement plans best suits your needs.

View and/or download the Investing for Your Retirement guide. This publication provides basic investment education information that will help you make plans to save for your retirement.

Once you have chosen the retirement plan that best suits your needs, please complete a Retirement Plan Enrollment (Form 1100) and return it to your employer. Your employer will complete the employer portion of the form and submit it to the Retirement Systems on your behalf.

Employees of local subdivisions of government are not eligible for State ORP participation.
